First impressions?
Where on earth is it? When you reach 300-302 Chiswick High Road, you will see the address on the front of a chemist's. You need to walk down the side of the building (past the fruit and veg stall) to find the entrance to the spa.
Once you're inside, stairs lead up to the first floor, and a gorgeous scent wafts down to greet you. Reception is a smart room with a reception desk, a comfy leather sofa, and a display of Jurlique products. The Jonathan Ward candles on display turned out to be responsible for the wonderful aromas in reception and the relaxation room.
Thought has gone into the décor. The brown leather sofas and glass counter-tops are made from recycled materials, in keeping with the natural and eco-friendly ethos of the spa.
The polite receptionist offered me a seat and Katie, the spa manager, came to greet me, offering to take my bag and fetch me a drink. I filled in my consultation form and Katie took me on a quick tour of the spa.
What's on offer?
The Chiswick Health and Wellness Spa is a set of treatment rooms, so don't expect any wet or thermal facilities. You can expect to find a good selection of treatments using natural products, and complementary therapies from expert practitioners.
There is a quiet relaxation room with a combination of loungers, chairs and a sofa. The room is on an upper floor and doesn't overlook the street, so it's pretty peaceful.
Which treatments did you have?
I had the Jurlique aromatherapy facial (75 minutes, £65).
What were the treatments like?
Mami, my therapist, explained that she would customise the facial to my skin type. She asked me a few questions and looked at my skin closely. Mami convinced me that my skin wasn't actually as bad as I thought it was, and selected some products for normal to combination skin.
Mami began with a lavender-scented cleanser, then mixed up a natural exfoliant mask of oats and honey. The anti-bacterial honey and soothing oats were a pleasantly sweet-smelling mixture, and it exfoliated, too, as Mami gently rubbed it away.
Mami's facial massage was incredibly soothing. Working under my eyes, each little circle she drew gently with her fingertips made it harder and harder to stay awake. Lymphatic-drainage techniques can be very effective on puffy eyes, but the strokes used are very gentle!
To finish the facial, Mami applied a light, natural moisturiser, then left me to drink some water and get up in my own time. I headed to the relaxation room for a flick through a glossy magazine and a cup of herbal tea. My skin felt smooth and clean, and looked even and fresh.
What else could you have?
A selection of Jurlique treatments including facials (two for men), a tea-tree body scrub, aromatherapy cocoon and a detoxifying body mask. You can try deep-tissue, aromatherapy or hot-stone massage, and there's a massage for pregnant women, too.
Beauty treatments include waxing, manicures and pedicures, lash and brow tinting, and Beaubronz natural tanning.
Their natural therapies clinic has an osteopath, nutritionist, naturopath, reflexologist and Reiki Master.
Food facts
Food isn't served in the spa, but there are refreshments available in the relaxation room. There are quite a few nice restaurants and cafés on the High Road if you fancy some food.
Was it worth it?
For London, and for a high standard of treatments, the prices are surprisingly affordable.
We loved
Mami. A polite, friendly and skilful therapist.
The Jonathan Ward candles. Divine and different.
We didn't love
Not living anywhere near Chiswick High Road. This is a great treatment rooms for West Londoners.
Who do you think would like it?
Locals wanting natural treatments.
Anyone who fancies a spa treatment or holistic therapy, but is put off visiting spas that look too clinical, too girly, too busy, or too pretentious. The Chiswick Health and Wellness Spa is discreet and smart but friendly.
Why did you give the spa this rating?
We gave The Chiswick Health and Wellness Spa 5 bubbles, because its offering is spot-on for its location. The spa doesn't offer the ultimate in Mayfair luxury, but it's on a high street, not in a Park Lane hotel. It delivers great treatments with a health and wellness focus, as it promises.
The spa has been in business for ten years, and has a sense of relaxed professionalism that is only gained from experience. I felt very comfortable there.
Would you go again?
Yes, if I lived in London. If you're local and like things natural and organic, I encourage you to visit.
