MSW reviews Bannatyne Spa Hotel, Hastings
We were treated appallingly at this hotel. I booked a room for my wife and I and our 4 year old little boy for what we hoped would be a quiet, relaxing weekend. Our room, which was dirty and small, was directly above a function room which, on our first night, had a party that didn't finish until after midnight. The party wasn't particularly wild or raucous but the sound proofing is so woefully inadequate that any rest or sleep was impossible. My wife and son were deeply unhappy. We discussed our problem with the hotel's management and were met with complete indifference. We were informed that there was another party the next day, with more live music and because of this decided not to stay the second night.
When we checked out it transpired we had already been charged for the 2nd night and to secure a refund needed to speak to the hotel's Operations Manager. I called this guy several times but he didn't have the courtesy or interest to call back. Needless to say we've never seen a penny of our refund. and it's galling that no one ever even apologised for our ruined night.
The food is mediocre, the rooms furnished to a standard a little below what one might expect, and the overall feel of the place is that much has been done on the cheap – it's a pretty country house marred by the addition of a large plastic conservatory. The staff are pleasant enough but the service is painfully slow and inefficient, for example, we never saw the extra bed we were promised – not that it mattered – we couldn't sleep anyway.
We did visit the spa (before the bad night). It's ok - nothing special, but comfortable enough.
I travel a lot throughout the UK and in my view a great many other 4 star hotels have much more to offer. If you read some of the other reviews on this and other websites it is clear that many people have suffered the same problems we encountered and there are plenty who've had different problems. If you're thinking of staying at this hotel I'd urge you to think again and go elsewhere.
