Denise reviews Grayshott Spa, Surrey
I booked a rather indulgent day at Grayshott Spa seeking tranquillity and solitude after a busy summer entertaining the children. I wanted some restful ‘me’ time – which is exactly what I got!
The spa is set amidst the stunning landscape of the Surrey/Hampshire border. The building itself is charming and elegant and I was met by an efficient and helpful receptionist who welcomes and informs. A couple of forms later (mainly medical history) and I was escorted to the spa area by a young porter who explained the layout and amenities as we went.
I had booked two treatments for the day: the Grayshott Classic 55 Massage and a Hydradermie facial. The therapists for both were punctual & approachable, asking relevant questions and discussing any concerns or medical issues. I suffer from eczema and both therapists paid attention to my concerns regarding products. They also tweaked the treatment programme to suit my sensitive skin – I felt as though they had really listened to my needs and carried out exactly what they said they would do – in other spas I have often felt that the therapists just pay my eczema lip service! However, at Grayshott I felt comfortable in their knowledge and expertise; safe in their hands. Both treatments were unobtrusive and divine – I left each one feeling nourished, relaxed and balanced.
Grayshott offers a number of facilities – all designed to offer the guest a calm and peaceful retreat. As soon as you step over the Spa threshold you are greeted by the wonderful Helga, who really does epitomise the word ‘service’. She advises how long you should spend time in the steam/sauna cabins and checks on you regularly to ensure that everything is okay. She plies you with cold flannels just when you think you can no longer take any more heat and then comes to get you when your time is up. She already has the shower running for when you step out, and brings fresh towels before handing you iced water and tucking you up in the relaxation room – where you just lie back and close your eyes. She keeps an eye on you in there too! What a joy, and an asset she is – all done with a smile and a kind word.
The lunch/dining experience is also very good. The dining room has excellent views of the grounds and the service from the staff is perfunctory, efficient and polite – just as I like it. The lunch menu offers a variety of salads, meat and fish and everything is tasty and quite delicious. I just loved the yogurt /fruit dessert – heavenly. One of the services on offer at Grayshott that I particularly liked was the availability of complimentary teas/coffees and fruit that is available throughout the day – in other spas these go down as extras, but at Grayshott they are there for you to help yourself – a thoughtful touch.
In fact, Grayshott has a certain ambience that other spas don’t quite manage to acquire. I have visited other leading spas that have a very municipal, de-humanising effect, that always leaves you somewhat wanting more. Grayshott, with its peaceful, tranquil functionality (nothing is too much for the staff), seems to personalise your visit. It makes you feel special and valued – even when you are wandering around in your bathrobe and slippers! Yes, it was busy on my visit (a fully booked bank holiday weekend) but you wouldn’t really know that, as there is a distinct hush of activity that quietly gets on with the job without you even realising.
I love it here – it is quite different from other spas/health resorts. Grayshott has a relaxed elegance about it. It doesn’t pretend, it doesn’t compete – it doesn’t need to, it is quite incomparable to anything else.
So did my day achieve what I set out? Absolutely - peace, pampering with no phones or raised voices. I emerged feeling relaxed, re-juvenated and special. And today? Well its back to the grind.
