Carrie reviews The Bath House Spa at Royal Crescent Hotel

My friend and I have just visited Bath House Spa at the Royal Crescent in Bath. The hotel was absolutely wonderful and the staff so nice, friendly and helpful. We really felt special. However, we felt at the end of the day that this was a first class hotel with an OK Spa rather than somewhere for a Spa break.

After an hour or two in the Spa at best you could get bored - not enough "toys" in the pool in terms of jets or thallaso bubbles, hot tub not hot enough and no bubbles, no experience showers etc. There wasn't even really a proper quiet room. The only places to lounge were a balcony above the pool that was almost as hot as the sauna and a lounge next to the reception area where you could hear the receptionist's phone and people were being collected for their treatments. It was altogether too compact so you had to escape to Bath town centre to fill in time. Fine if that appeals but not if you were after a very chilling spa break - on a visit to SenSpa, Careys Manor we arrive at 9 am and leave at 9 pm without ever getting bored, even though we never leave the building.

Our general reaction was Bath House needs a serious update and possibly even to expand into the grounds a bit if it is to be considered a serious Spa break contender. The changing rooms did not have enough lockers (on our first day we struggled to get one). There were only two showers which were municipal-style communal, so you couldn't shower properly unless you were prepared to strip in front of strangers, only two private changing areas and one WC. What was also irritating was no costume drier, just plastic bags to take your wet costume away and they sometimes ran out

On the plus side there was absolutely nothing wrong with the treatments on offer, indeed some were amazing, and so was the hotel itself and its staff. However, having done our Bath sightseeing, as a Spa we wouldn't go back and I think that if they want that market they need to make improvements. What is in the Spa area might squeak 4 bubbles but certainly not 5 anymore. I feel guilty saying that when I think of our fabulous suite for the price of a room and how nice all the staff were, but it is true if you are rating the Spa rather than the hotel itself.
