Chewton Glen, New Milton - 5 bubbles

One of the Good Spa Spies was invited to Chewton Glen and had her chakras balanced and spirits raised by the superb customer service and wonderful surroundings. A slice of luxury and indulgence a stone's throw away from the beach in the New Forest.

"I had a one day package at Chewton Glen and, based on speaking to various people, was expecting great things.

I came away with mixed feelings. The pool is a great size - but the air temperature was absolutely roasting. After swimming, I sat reading a book for a while but got so hot I had to leave the area and go to the restaurant. As this was filled with a party of locals who'd dropped in for lunch, it wasn't the most relaxing atmopshere.

The thalassotherapy area, however, was the best I've seen anywhere, and great to be able to use it without charge.

Treatments are extremely expensive. My body scrub, massage and facial were fine - but only fine. There was nothing particularly special about them, and collectively they cost over £200. Fortunately, this was a work 'thank you'.

The multiple flights of stairs between areas make the experience feel disjointed - one and a half flights of stairs (down) between reception and the pool, a further flight of stairs (up) to the changing rooms and sauna etc.

I've had better spa experiences for less money elsewhere, and while it was nice, I felt it was overpriced. Next time, I will travel further and go to Champneys. "
