"I do not normally write this sort of letter but felt compelled to after the awful experience of booking a spa day at Bannatynes York to celebrate my Hen weekend.
I would like to start by saying the day itself was enjoyable for me and the facilities were good. The member of staff who did my treatment was polite and proffesional and the young lady who showed us around was friendly.
My chief bridesmaid had wanted to arrange the weekend for 14 of us to use the facilities under the spa day for two package. We thought it sounded great especially the choice of treatments which originally included leg massage, manicure and pedicure- these options were later removed from the list. We were informed that each pair had to pay a deposit of £20. A nightmare for 14 people who live in different areas of the country, but manageable, despite only being able to get through to Elaine our organiser between 9-5 Monday-Friday. Having spent every lunch time for a week on the phone on hold or being told I had the wrong number (trust me, I had the correct number, sometimes it worked sometimes not, but I called that number many times and half the time I got Bannatynes, half the time I got a school) we finally paid the deposits and were told to pay the rest on the day. Rikia was then told the remaining balance needed to be paid by the 23rd May so we had to go through the whole process again. It didn't seem appropriate to pay a deposit then the balance so soon after despite being told we could pay on the day. Again, trying to get through on the phone to pay was a nightmare. I paid the balance on the 21st May and was emailed a receipt. She mentioned that she would post me vouchers for everyone.I did not receive anything through the post from the company at all. After I paid I emailed twice asking for the vouchers or any sort of confirmation and the only correspondence I got was an email stating the times of treatments, what we needed to bring and that we were booked into a buffet lunch at £6 per head and had to pay in advance for this! There was no way I was about to call up and go through trying to pay you *again* especially since I had to chase this information down. I asked Elaine what was included in the buffet and got no reply so I called the spa where I was told it would consist of sandwiches fruit and tap water. For £84 this does not seem adequate. We informed Elaine that we would not have the buffet (when we arrived at the spa it seemed that this message had not been passed on). I was aprehensive as to what service we would receive at the spa but did not want to complain in case it caused the staff to be rude to us when we got there.
We arrived at the spa at 9.45 when our appointments were due to start so yes admittedly we could have been earlier, however as we were eating into our own treatment time the snappy impatient attitude of the member of staff was unwarranted and the members of our party who arrived before me could have been shown to the changing rooms or treatment room. We were all shown upstairs and asked for our vouchers which of course we did not have. just before leaving the house I'd had a sudden feeling that I should print my payment receipt for the remaining balance of £214 that I paid on 21st May which was a good job since they told me I hadn't paid the right amount and I still owed money. The lady continued to argue that there was no record of my payment and I continued to argue that I had indeed paid the full amount. THis was very upsetting for me to start a "relaxing" hen weekend in this way. Finally we were shown around the spa and allowed to enjoy our day. As one of my party didn't turn up I took two treatments as they had been paid for and they were nice enough to paint my nails instead of having two scalp massages. After my treatments my bridesmaids informed me that they had come out of their treatments to find 4 staff members waiting for them ordering them to provide credit card details to pay more money. (The amount was a very obscure unrounded amount). They were very upset by this and said the experience had been ruined for them.
Since starting to organise this event I have constantly felt that I have been chasing down the staff for information and even to make payments! I have felt like an inconvenience even asking for info. I often wondered if we were receiving sub standard service because we were taking advantage of the Spa day for two offer (not so much after seeing the amount of Elemis promoting on the day) I also strongly feel that communication between Elaine and the spa was inadequate and even more so between me and Elaine. I was unsure where Elaine was and the problems with the phone number made me feel insecure about making payment this way.
The facilities at the venue were lovely and the treatments were relaxing and professional (except the unusually stinging facial-I have slightly sensitive skin but thought the technician should use products appropriate to my skin type) but the experience was ruined by the incompetence and rudeness of some of the staff involved.
We left the spa and have not heard anything since so I can only assume that the staff members involved have realised their mistake. I thought the treatments were good value for money but I will not return because of the experience we had."
