Spa treatments explained by the experts: Colour therapy/chromotherapy

Chromotherapy (alternative spelling: chromatherapy) is an alternative therapy which claims to use colour and light to balance "energy" within your body. The Good Spa Guide speaks to Ragdale Hall's chromotherapy therapist, Jenny Taylor, to find out more.

What is colour therapy or chromotherapy?

"Colour therapy is an ancient form of healing. It is a holistic approach to well-being that is subtle and non-invasive. It is based on the belief that colours have a healing energy that can bring harmony and balance. They can help to balance energy, air creativity and aid learning."

Where did colour therapy originate from?

"Colour therapy does not originate from one particular place or time. Mankind's early cultures were aware that the colours in nature affected them. They believed that the colours of their environment provided them with health and vitality. As civilisations developed, so did man's knowledge of colour and its healing properties.

For example, the ancient Egyptians built healing "colour halls" in their temples. Coloured crystals were placed in the ceilings where the natural sunlight would shine through, bathing the room in that particular colour. People would then go into the room with the colour they most needed."

What is colour therapy good for?

"As we grow from a young baby into adulthood, we are on a journey that brings many insights and experiences. Certain experiences may leave us needing harmony, upliftment or healing to pick ourselves up and continue the quest to reach our goal. To help us to achieve this, we can turn to colour therapy.

We are all drawn to certain colours, be it in the way we choose our clothes we wear, the colour food we eat or what we decorate our houses in. Seeing what colours we are drawn to can explain our state of well-being. To achieve inner balance – "Yin and Yang" – a colour therapist will look at your favourite colours and match them with their complementary colours."

What can you expect from a colour therapy session?

"At Ragdale Hall we offer "Chakra Silks", which is a treatment that uses silks in seven colours. These silks are placed upon each of the chakras (each chakra responds to a particular colour) one at a time, starting at the top of your head and finishing at the base chakra at the bottom of your spine.

During the treatment you remain fully clothed and lie down on your back. It will leave you feeling totally relaxed and rebalanced.

Suggestions from your colour therapist may include:

* Red is a good colour if you feel you are lacking vibrancy. Red isn't a good colour to wear above the waist if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure as it is thought to increase stress or anxiety.

* Blue is a good colour if you need more calm in your life; blue isn't considered a good colour if you have low blood pressure."

What tips would you give someone interested in experiencing colour therapy?

"You can take responsibility for your own healing, using the healing powers within you. You can take away what you have learnt in your colour therapy session and continue your healing journey in the comfort of your own home or garden.

Colour therapy can also explain why we may dislike or like certain colours, and can help show you how to balance colours for a state of well-being.

Keep an open mind, take on board what the therapist may tell you and allow yourself to see what effect colour therapy can have on you."

What other therapies are influenced by colour therapy?

Colour meditation, colour acupuncture, crystal healing, colour breathing and rainbow meditation.
