What is aqua aerobics?
Aqua aerobics is a combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training which takes place in the shallow end of a swimming pool.
What is aqua aerobics good for?
Exercising in water provides a supportive environment for your body. The buoyancy of water reduces your weight on impact, resulting in much less strain on your muscles and joints.
The support of the water can also allow for a greater range of motion than regular exercise. You can try moves that gravity wouldn't give you time for if you were out of water!
The risk of overheating is greatly reduced with aqua aerobics, as the water provides a constant cooling system for your body.
Aqua aerobics is perfect for:
* people with mobility problems
* people with physical restrictions
* burning calories
* working the major muscle groups
* all-over toning
Before you go
You can find aqua aerobics classes at most municipal swimming pools, as well as at many spas. You'll need to bring your swimming costume, of course, but you don't have to be a strong swimmer. You'll be able to keep a foot on the bottom of the pool at all times!
What to expect from an aqua aerobics class
A typical aqua aerobics class will include:
* a short warm-up to get your body used to the water and your muscles ready for exercise
* cardiovascular exercises to get your heart pumping
* balancing exercises
* co-ordination exercises
*stretches
* simple dance-style moves
* a cool-down at the end to avoid injury
Some aqua aerobics classes may incorporate props in their workouts. These could include:
* webbed gloves for added resistance
* water weights
* dumbbells
* ankle weights
*floats for buoyancy
Afterwards
As you'll already be in the pool, you may fancy a quick swim, or a visit to the Jacuzzi. A trip to the sauna or steam room can help your muscles relax after your class, or why not indulge in a massage or facial to treat yourself after all your hard work?
