What is Jivamukti yoga?

Meaning "liberation while living", Jivamukti yoga focuses on applying the philosophy of yoga to everyday life. An energetic form of yoga, similar to Vinyasa, you can expect a class to be fairly physically intense.

What is the aim of Jivamukti yoga?

To be uplifting and explorative.

Jivamukti yoga is based on five principles: scripture, or the study of yogic teachings and chanting; bhakti, or the presence of god in every being; ahimsa, or a non-violent, compassionate lifestyle; nada yoga, or harmony of mind and body through sound and listening; and meditation.

Precautions

Consult your doctor and your yoga teacher if you have any pre-existing health or mobility problems.

If you are pregnant, try a specially adapted antenatal yoga class. These will include safe, comfortable positions and are designed to help you prepare for labour and birth.

What to expect from Jivamukti yoga

Expect a flowing, robust class involving fluid movement, meditation and visualisation, chanting and uplifting music. Each class explores a different topic.

Even if you feel a little silly chanting, give it a go – the act of producing the noises can help loosen you up, and some even say it will help you open your chakras and assist with the flow of energy!

What is Jivamukti yoga good for?

If you're looking for a workout combined with spiritual elevation, this is the class for you!

Afterwards

Take some time to return to reality after a yoga session, as even the more dynamic classes can leave you a little spaced-out.
