What is ISHTA yoga?

The Integrated Science of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda. ISHTA yoga takes the postures from Hatha yoga and combines them with a tantric philosophy for meditation and the ancient Indian system of medicine and healing, Ayurveda.

What is the aim of ISHTA yoga?

ISHTA yoga aims to be a personalised style that addresses each individual's needs. It aims to increase mental focus, flexibility, stamina and a better understanding of your body's needs.

Precautions

Consult your doctor and your yoga teacher if you have any pre-existing health or mobility problems.

If you are pregnant, try a specially adapted antenatal yoga class. These will include safe, comfortable positions and are designed to help you prepare for labour and birth.

What to expect from ISHTA yoga

ISHTA yoga incorporates different postures with specific breathing techniques to increase mental focus. Your ISHTA journey will start slowly, becoming more vigorous and challenging as your skills build. Movements can be similar to the vigorous Ashtanga yoga and may involve equipment, like Iyengar yoga.

The tantric meditation is about connecting body and mind. Through meditation, mantras and breathing, you will focus on recognising your individuality, and seeking out how best to use the postures to suit your own needs.

What is ISHTA yoga good for?

ISHTA yoga is about personalisation and balance. If you're not sure which type of yoga to try, this may be a good place to start, as it combines elements of most other styles, but allows you to build on your strengths.

It is usually vigorous enough to make you more toned and flexible, it focuses on alignment of the body, breathing, connecting with oneself and building strength, stamina and a positive outlook on life.

Afterwards

After a yoga session, make sure you give your body time to wind down and your mind time to consider what you have learnt.
