What is Bikram yoga?

Bikram yoga is a form of yoga where traditional yoga poses and breathing exercises are performed in a heated, humid room. It is the most popular form of hot yoga.

What is the aim of Bikram yoga?

Bikram yoga's goal is to improve your general health. The heat and humidity of the room make it easier to perform stretches without straining muscles, and will increase circulation.

Precautions

If you have any pre-existing health problems, it is vital that you consult your doctor before taking part in any Bikram yoga sessions.

Bikram yoga is a strenuous form of exercise and is not suitable for those with heart problems, high blood pressure, or pregnant women.

What to expect from Bikram yoga

Bikram yoga involves a series of 26 postures and two breathing exercises. These postures and techniques are guided by specific verbal guidance from the instructor. The process takes place in a room that is heated to 40.5 degrees centigrade, with 40 per cent humidity.

You will get hot! Consider your clothing – shorts and sports bras or vests are a popular choice for women, and shorts and light t-shirts or vests are good for men. You may want to take a moment to ensure that your clothing choice won't leave you exposing more than you would like during some of the more acrobatic poses, though!

What is Bikram yoga good for?

Bikram yoga is a more strenuous form of yoga, so, like aerobic exercise, you may lose weight, tone muscles and find that you can breathe more easily and that your digestion improves.

Afterwards

Bikram yoga is guaranteed to get you sweating, so make sure you bring a change of clothes and leave time for a shower before you leave the studio!
