With such a dizzying variety of body treatments available on most spa menus, it's sometimes bewildering trying to pick the right one to suit your mood. We asked Jane Quenault, Spa Training Manager for Champneys, to help us explain the different types of body treatments available and what their benefits are.

Massage

"Massage can relieve muscle aches and pains. Massage is excellent for knots in shoulders and tackling lower-back tension, for gym users or runners who have muscle aches in legs. A massage will relax and soothe and boost your general sense of well-being.

Massage improves circulation so can improve the appearance of your skin by making it look brighter. The oils your therapist uses during a massage treatment will soften and nourish your skin, too, making it feel better. Finally, massage is detoxifying, as toxins are drained towards lymph nodes during massage to be released from your body."

Wraps

"Wraps are generally quite a relaxing treatment to have. Usually in a wrap, you'll experience some kind of massage, such as foot, scalp or facial massage, whilst wrapped. Different sorts of wraps are available, including nourishing and hydrating wraps that use body butters, detoxifying wraps that use seaweed or marine ingredients, purifying wraps that use mud, and many more.

Wraps can be highly beneficial for your skin. The wrap will keep heat in your body, making your skin very warm, which allows the products applied to be deeply absorbed, due to your skin's pores being open."

Slimming/toning treatments

"These kinds of treatments usually focus on a specific area, such as thighs, hips, bum, or stomach. A slimming or toning treatment usually consists of a massage and mask application to the area. Some treatments use bandages to wrap the area, or masks that heat up/cool down and can set hard on your skin. Some include electrical currents to tone your muscles.

The massage will usually be quite intense, designed to break down fatty deposits. Products can be quite cool and refreshing, such as seaweed or toning masks. The emphasis is on the results you will see afterwards and not necessarily on making you feel relaxed."

Body exfoliation

"A scrub is an excellent before or after holiday treatment or just before a fake-tan application. Scrubs and exfoliation treatments are designed to remove dead skin cells and leave your skin feeling silky soft.

Having your skin exfoliated can improve absorption of other products applied to your skin (usually an exfoliation treatment finishes with an application of a body moisturising product)."
