Treatments for when you want to try something different
At some point in the life of every dedicated spa-goer, there comes a time when you look at the spa treatment menu and think, "Hmm, it's time to try something different."
But what?
For some, that could mean trying a hot-stone massage instead of the usual back, neck and shoulders treatment. Or, it could mean reaching for the spa dictionary and giving something a whirl that you've never heard of before so you have to look it up first!
So, we've put together a selection of some of the more unusual treatments that are available at UK spas.
Try a traditional Jewish East-End steam room treatment
Give Hydrotherm a whirl
Transformational Hydrotherapy
Lavish on Lush
Bored by your massage oil coming from a bottle?
Then try an innovative treatment with a candle-wax massage and take a journey through your senses instead. A candle-wax massage uses special candles made from either soy or palm oil which burn at low-temperatures to produce a safe, comfortable, warm liquid wax. Your therapist will drizzle the melted wax over your body from a lit candle. You can experience a Sensorial Candle Massage at The Vale, near Cardiff.
SenS Spa on Park Lane, London, offer a warm candle-wax massage combined with a Lava Shell massage. The Amala Hyatt in Birmingham offers a LUX candle massage.
Try a traditional Jewish East-End steam room treatment
You can do this at The Porchester Spa in London. Schmeissing involves a full chair massage while your legs and feet soak in a huge tub of Epsom salts. Then head to the steam room to have a massage with a soft, thick, soapy, raffia besom -- a kind of broom! Great for circulation, guaranteed to leave you glowing and definitely something unusual.
Give Hydrotherm a whirl
If you don't like massages because you have problems turning over or find it uncomfortable lying on your front, then give Hydrotherm massage a try. Hydrotherm is a form of massage which your therapist carries out while you lie face-up on heated water-filled cushions.
Hydrotherm massage can be incredibly comfortable, and allows your back to be massaged as your therapist slides massaging hands between you and the cushions, using your body weight to give pressure. You can experience Hydrotherm massage at a wide range of spas including Savana Urban Spa, Bailiffscourt and The Solent Hotel and Spa.
Transformational Hydrotherapy
Take Hydrotherm up a level at Wallets Court in Kent and experience "Transformational Hydrotherapy". This treatment, apparently "combines the physical therapy / massage with a form of guided meditation, which helps to reconnect muscles with the brain and allows you to relearn how to use problem areas more effectively."
Lavish on Lush
Famous for their scented soaps, melts and bath bombs, Lush have branched out into spa-world, currently offering two signature treatments at their spas in London, on the King's Road, and also in Leeds, Poole and Kingston. Lush describe their Synaesthesia massage as "the most extraordinary blend of experiences, music, birdsong, colour, scent... which takes you into a world of dreams."
The Lush Validation facial promises: " a spectacle for the senses.... using herbs, natural things, words and skills -- and a little bit of witchcraft." Definitely a world away from the usual cleanse, exfoliate and mask! Lush are also developing a neck, back and shoulder massags well as a foot treatment, which also promise to be very Lush and very different.
