Introduction

If you want to show someone you love that you love them, or just want to find a place to spend some good-quality time with them, how about trying something different, special and fun?

Going to a spa with your partner or friend is one of the more interesting and fun things you can do together. Spa experiences for two, and romance rituals and packages are available all year round.

Massage for two

Many spas offer massage treatments for couples - romantically involved or otherwise. This will often involve twin massage beds and at least two therapists so that you can synchronise your pleasure by having the same treatment at the same time, or each have a customised massage lying side by side.

You can try this at one of the spas we rate as a 5-bubble spa SenSpa at Carey's Manor.

There's also the Couples' VIP Suite at The Spa at Chancery Court in London, with its own changing facilities, shower and steam room. With a therapist each, you can have the treatment of your choice. You can book the suite by the hour.

Also popular are the couple's treatment rooms at The Lanesborough Spa Studio (another one of our 5-bubble spas). You can enjoy a 45-minute Le Serail mud treatment and an hour-long His and Hers massage.

We've visited the private treatment rooms at the Aquitaine Spa at the Runnymede Hotel and that is a great space for couples to chill and have massages and other treatments in tandem.

A rasul or serail mud ritual

This is a great treatment to do with a lover, or with friends. It's great fun, it's steamy (literally!) and it's unlike anything you're likely to have done together before. Get naked (or near to it), coat each other in different coloured muds, and then sit together in a twinkling-tiled steam room. It sounds odd but it is an intensely sensual experience. After the mud has worked its magic, the shower you'll take together afterwards will bring you back into romantic focus. Afterwards, you'll feel gorgeously calm and snug, with loose, relaxed muscles and soothed, soft skin. Follow it up with a long massage or scented bath and you'll be loved up for weeks.

A rasul or serail is also a lot of fun to have with a friend or friends. Here are a few places in the country where you can try it out:

* New Park Manor, Hampshire

* One Spa at The Sheraton, Edinburgh

* Celtic Manor, Newport, Wales

Romantic rituals

A romance ritual features a series of spa pleasures and - if you choose wisely - the opportunity to float around in the spa's pools and glide around their other facilities with the person you like best of all in the whole world... Spas usually pull out the stops for the romance rituals and you will probably find the treatment rooms strewn with rose petals, plus candle-light and sensual music. Once you've got used to the idea of having a couple of therapists also being present, you'll enjoy the luxurious intimate treat of it all.

A Romance Ritual at The Treatment Rooms in Brighton is so good that it should be prescribed as couple therapy. Lying in warm, twinkling, ambient treatment rooms, your couple's spa ritual starts with a foot bath, before a full-body exfoliation, and then a soothing massage to ease any tension in your body ... and in your relationship! This is followed by an aromatherapy pressure point facial, and completed with fruit and tea in their relaxation room.

KuBu's Signature Ritual is over two hours of perfect romantic pampering. Begin with a soothing flower petal foot soak, followed with your choice of full-body massage, and a KuBu body scrub. End your ritual with an aromatic flower petal bath (plenty big enough for two), enjoying a glass of champagne, KuBu chocolates, and each other's company. Blissful.

The Time for Two couple's ritual at the Elemis Day Spa includes an Exotic Frangipani Body Nourish Float, and a Well-Being Back Massage.

Mothers and daughters

Want to treat your daughter after a long month of revision? Or your mum on her Ruby Wedding? Lots of spas offer Mother-and-Daughter packages.

Runnymede's private luxury Aquitaine suite specialises in treatments for two, whether it be mother and daughter, couples or friends. The perfect place to spend some quality me-time together.

Why not try out the "Mother and Teen Daughter Re-Treat Package" at the Academy Spa in Harrogate for £63 per person.

Whoever you go with - enjoy! And let us know how you got on.
