Spas for men

These are some spas which do a great job at catering for men. (And women.)

Bishopstrow House, Wiltshire

Bailiffscourt Hotel, West Sussex

Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland

Titanic, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

Celtic Manor, South Wales

The Refinery, London

Bishopstrow House, Wiltshire

The Just For Men menu in the Halcyon Spa at Bishopstrow includes a Devil's Mint Full-Body Exfoliation, a half-hour session using seaweed and peppermint preparations that will leave your body feeling more cleansed than it ever does after a five-minute shower. Or spend the best part of two hours undergoing their Total Time Out, incorporating your choice of facial to unblock pores and counteract the roughing-up your skin receives if you shave every day, followed by a deep-tissue massage for comprehensive de-knotting of stressed muscles.

Bailiffscourt Hotel, West Sussex

The Temple Spa at Bailiffscourt is a stylish hideaway on the south coast. Peacocks strut about the gardens and you can take a short saunter through the woods to the beach for a splash in the sea. Male customers get Japanese-style robes to wear (hey, if Sean Connery can look good in one in Never Say Never Again, you can, too). Massaging with marine products, as well as the Go Guy Male Executive Facial are among the options, after which lounging is almost impossible not to do, especially when they bring you a glass of champagne as you sit by the pool.

Gleneagles Hotel, Scotland

The Gleneagles spa does a selection of Treatments for Men including the Golfer's Tonic, an 80-minute session involving a paraffin wax mask for feet and legs, and a profoundly effective back massage using hot stones. This is a fantastic spa with great facilities, and is part of a high-end hotel that once hosted a G8 summit, as well as having an award-winning restaurant.

Titanic, Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

Britain's first eco-spa, Titanic offers a menu of Gentlemen's Tonic treatments, specifically aimed at guys who are new to the spa experience. The Express Energy Facial will give you a 25-minute taster, perfect for dropping by in your lunch-break, or settle into a 55-minute Intensive Energising Body Treatment, an all-over routine that exfoliates (scrubs) the skin, and leads to the combined effects of feeling both revitalised and deeply relaxed.

Celtic Manor, South Wales

Set in 1,400 acres of lush parkland in the Usk Valley, Celtic Manor is a destination hotel and spa that piles on the style. Yep, there's golf for the swingers among you, but there are also two health spas to choose from. You're not going to drop here for half-an-hour. Go for the full-day Gentlemen's Retreat package, including a cleansing and smoothing facial, a relaxing neck, back and shoulder massage, and sumptuous foot therapy; they throw in a bento-box Japanese lunch in the Forum Café, too.

The Refinery, London

Among spas that cater exclusively for men, the Refinery spas, with premises in Mayfair and in Harrods, stand out. The range of treatments extends from straightforward haircuts and shaves, through sports massages, foot therapy and facials. Detailed attention (eyebrow-shaping, nail-grooming) will ensure you're even more good-looking when you leave than when you arrived. The Refinery is also where you can have all that uncool excess hair removed from your back, your bum and your bits - often referred to as a "back, sack and crack". Guaranteed to please the love of your life.
