Do I need to be qualified to work as a spa therapist?

Legally, no, but without training you could end up in hot water.

Whilst there are no legal requirements for therapists to have received formal training, it is worth remembering that if you do not have a recognised qualification you cannot get professional liability insurance.

Moreover, if you are employed by a spa, you would invalidate their insurance if you are working without a formal qualification.

Formal training will give you the skills and confidence to work as a spa therapist, and without them you run the risk of not only performing procedures incorrectly and having some very unhappy customers, but even causing injury to your clients. Should this occur, you would not be covered or supported by insurance or any governing bodies, and any subsequent expenses or liabilities would fall on your shoulders.

No legitimate, professional spa would employ an unqualified therapist, and you should always ensure that your employer has full professional liability insurance.
