What would I earn as a spa therapist, and how long are the hours?

A beauty therapist can expect to earn between £12,000 and £16,000 a year, depending on experience and location, while a spa manager may earn around £20,000 or more.

As with other service professions, therapists usually earn additional money from tips, and from commission earned from product sales, as therapists are encouraged to promote retail sales too. Sales commission is usually around 10%.

With additional training in a specialised massage technique or complementary therapy, a salary could increase significantly. Massage therapists and complementary health practitioners can earn anywhere between £14,000 and £40,000 depending on their experience and training.

Working hours will depend on the company, as spa opening hours can vary. Most spas will be open between 9am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, with many opening on Sunday too. Hotel and residential spas are likely to open seven days a week, and for longer hours than treatment rooms.
