Chakra and qi - what are they?

The terms "chakra" and "qi" both refer to our life energy and are words used in different, ancient, holistic medical practices.

Several ancient medical systems are based on a holistic approach to healthcare and wellbeing. These systems - such as Chinese, and Ayurvedic medicine - feature the idea that our bodies are mapped by paths along which our life-energy flows around our bodies. Our spiritual, physical and emotional health is interrelated. When the energy is flowing properly, we feel well - in body, mind and spirit. On the other hand, when this flow of energy is blocked, or not balanced, we develop problems with our health and wellbeing.

"Chakra" is a Sanskrit word and is used in Hinduism, and some Asian cultures to refer to the points and paths of energy that map your body.

"Qi" is the word used in Chinese medicine to describe the energy that flows along "meridians" - similar to the pathways, "chakras".

The idea of balancing energies for good health and wellbeing is key to many forms of massage and belief-related therapies - including Ayurveda massage, Thai massage, Reiki, Jin Shin Jyutsu and Acupuncture.
