How can I find out what you should and shouldn't do at a spa?

Just how far can you go wrong when you're lolling about in a robe all day?

The vital thing to remember is that everyone who is at a spa is at the spa to unwind, de-stress and relax. Keep that in mind, and you won't go far wrong. However, it's worth remembering a few polite rules, and that way you won't ruin your or anybody else's relaxing experience.

Here are the Good Spa Guide's top tips for good spa etiquette:

DO arrive early

Running late is a cardinal spa sin -- but the only person who suffers is you! You could risk losing your appointment, or having a reduced treatment time. Rushing in at the last minute is hardly the best start to your pampering experience, is it?

Arrive at least 15 minutes early, but earlier still if you want to make the most of any thermal experiences, pools and relaxation rooms before your treatment.

DON'T worry about taking your clothes off

Your therapist is a highly trained professional. In order to carry out most spa treatments, you are going to need to remove some items of clothing, but your therapist will let you know which ones. However, you aren't expected to go full-frontal! Discretion is almost an art form in a good spa. You'll be left alone to de-robe; once you are snuggled under the sheet or blankets of the treatment bed, your therapist will return. During your treatment, your therapist will use draping methods to ensure that only the part of your body that is being worked on is exposed.

If you still have some concerns, talk it through with your therapist -- they are there to ensure you are as comfortable as possible.

DO communicate

Honesty is the best policy at a spa. Being open with your therapist about any ailments, limitations, illnesses, allergies or conditions (including pregnancy), is vital to ensure your treatment is suitable and safe.

Also, listen to your therapist, follow instructions and, if you are unsure, ASK.

DON'T forget to shower

This may sound obvious, but ensuring you are clean before a treatment is common courtesy. You are going to be getting up close and personal with your therapist, so take the time to smell delightful.

DO show courtesy to others

It's a spa. Not a business meeting, not the hairdresser's and most certainly not a pub. Spas are places of tranquil relaxation. Out of consideration for others, don't use your mobile phone anywhere except in your room. Out of consideration for you, you might like to switch it off! Keep conversations low, as other people will be trying to relax and, in nearby rooms, will be having treatments. Also, if you want to get blotto, you might be better off in the hotel bar than near deep water. Yes?

DON'T eat a big meal before a treatment

Eating a large meal before a treatment, particularly one that involves lying on your stomach for some considerable time, whilst being manipulated, is probably not wise. Keep it light, sip on a herbal tea, and, most importantly, relax!
