Are spas for women only or will there be men there, too?
Spas were traditionally always more of a man-thing. From the Roman and Turkish baths that still operate today, right through to the more modern notion of a hot steam shave and moisturise at the barber's, spa baths and treatments have customarily been more about men than women. Only in the past few years has spa-going been seen as pampering and girly.
Now, the balance is changing. Most spas cater for both men and women, although the number of men at a mixed spa in the UK tends to be relatively low, and they're usually with a partner.
Some, such as Pennyhill Park, have single-sex areas within their facilities. There are also some men-only spas around, such as Nickel or the Refinery. Other spas popular with men include Old Course Hotel in St Andrews and Titanic in West Yorkshire.
