Are there any naturist spas in the UK?
There are many spas that describe themselves as "naturist". In the UK, you just have to be clear about what they mean by that...
What is naturism?
The International Naturist Federation describes naturism as: "a way of life in harmony with nature characterised by the practice of communal nudity, with the intention of encouraging self-respect, respect for others and for the environment".
What is a naturist spa?
In essence, a naturist spa should be very similar to a regular spa but without the clothes, and with plenty of the naturist ethos. You should expect the same range of treatments, customer service, pricing policies and refreshments as you would get anywhere else. There are various naturist spas across Europe that would fit with this description.
Part of the spa culture?
In many countries in Europe, naturism is a familiar concept. Generally, too, attitudes towards nudity are quite different, more relaxed than they would be in the UK, and nudity is even part of the spa culture in some ways. For example, if you go to a sauna in Sweden, you would not expect to wear any clothes, and you most definitely would not expect - or tolerate - anyone making a pass at you in there. In Germany too, naturist spas are not uncommon. Everyone understands what is meant, and most are familiar with the boundaries, and with the line between naturist and "something quite different".
"Naturist spas" in the UK - just a euphemism for swinging?
In the UK, understanding of naturism is a bit more confused than on the continent, probably largely because we're so much more uptight about getting our clothes off in public in the first place. But being prepared to take off your clothes, and being prepared to have sex with strangers are Not The Same Thing. It's very important that you know what to expect.
There are quite a few spas that list and describe themselves as "naturist" in the UK. But the boundaries are blurred. You have to know what you're looking for, and be prepared to ask questions.
In this country, there are a few spas across the country that describe themselves as "naturist" but you only have to look at the "special nights" and "private rooms" to know that they offer spa treatments you're not likely to find on the menu at any regular spas. It's in the interests of the spa concerned to make clear exactly what's on offer, to whom, and the facilities available for it.
If you're not looking to exchange "more" than dead skin cells for fresh ones, or ropey toe nails for polished pinkies, you might want to steer clear of spas offering:
* special nights
* private rooms
* anything for "open minded couples"
* 20-seater adult Jacuzzis
* adventure ...and of course "maybe more"...
So how can I find a naturist spa?
Whenever you're looking for a good spa that will suit you, your best bet is always to get as much information as you can, ask plenty of questions, and - often most importantly - to find a recommendation from someone you trust.
We reckon you're best off starting your search by contacting an organisation who are likely to know much more about it - try British Naturism.
Happy spa-ing!
