Why on earth should I go to a spa?

There are lots of very good reasons for going to a spa. Top of the list is that it's relaxing, and should leave you looking and feeling better than when you arrived.

Sometimes, at least in the UK, we have trouble adjusting to the idea of doing something that's just relaxing, that's supposed to make us look and feel better. After all, the British have always enjoyed a bit of discomfort - we know how to queue, and we were great at rationing...

"Ah, the good old days when poor was poor, lard was lard, that's what you used as face cream and you were grateful for it..." Well, lucky for us, times have changed.

Now we're allowed to get health and well-being benefits without having to suffer for it. The fact is, just doing nothing, preferably by a pool, yards from a table piled high with fruit and cake, can do us good and make us feel good at the same time. A bit of R&R leaves us feeling peaceful and renewed.

And, of course, being relaxed doesn't only mean doing nothing. Many spas encourage you to enjoy exercise, too, and offer great gym facilities, pools, tennis courts and even guided walks to get you out and get moving, and enjoy yourself doing it.

You may find people who are keen to discourage you from going to a spa, usually people who have never actually been to one. Let's examine the arguments...

"It's all a con anyway - it doesn't do you any good": Spas claim to make you look and feel better, and that seems to be the general outcome. They've been around for thousands of years, across the world, and they're increasingly popular. A spa trip will do you lots of good in lots of ways.

"You can get all those products at home anyway, and do it yourself": There is a reason people don't usually cut their own hair. Ever tried massaging your own back? As for beauty products: sure you can get most of the products and apply them yourself. And it's great fun. But it's a different experience. Have someone else apply it, let them apply it to a background of whale music. Let them swathe your face in hot towels. It's so unbelievably lovely!

"It's a total waste of money": If you get your money's worth, you haven't wasted your money. Our reviews and recommendations will ensure you make the best choice possible to get the experience you want!
