I have booked a spa trip with a friend during my period, should I cancel?

The first thing is – don't worry! You should be fine visiting a spa during your period. There are a few points worth bearing in mind, though.

If you are using wet facilities like a pool or Jacuzzi, or heat facilities like a sauna or steam room, you shouldn't be too far from a changing room with toilets and lockers. That means that if you need to use the toilet or grab a spare tampon from your locker, it shouldn't be too much trouble. As long as you change your tampon regularly and use a type suitable for your flow, you shouldn't experience any leakage.

You also should be absolutely fine having a massage. Before a spa treatment, you’ll have the chance to talk to your therapist about any concerns. You may feel shy talking about this, but they’ll have heard a lot worse, we can assure you!

If you're feeling a bit tender around your abdomen, tell your therapist, and she'll simply avoid pressing too hard around that area. In fact, as this is an issue for most women, it's actually quite common for spa therapists to ask if you're comfortable having your stomach massaged before you've even mentioned anything!

If you do feel too shy to talk to your therapist, you should get a health consultation form to fill in – the kind of questions you'll be asked are things such as "do you have any allergies?", "do you suffer from any medical conditions?" and so on. Your therapist will take note of any concerns you have, so if you write on your form "I'm on my period and am feeling a little tender" or something similar, your therapist will take note. Remember that almost all spa therapists are female, so they will understand!

When you go and have a full-body massage, you will probably be advised to undress down to your knickers, strip off completely, or wear a (not very sexy) paper thong. However, the choice is yours, so if you want to keep your own undies on, you can. Remember to take a spare pair in case a bit of massage oil gets on them though!

A full-body massage will usually involve your therapist massaging your back, arms, legs, shoulders and neck, and hands and feet. Your spa therapist may ask if you also want your stomach and chest area massaged, but that is entirely up to you.

Another point to remember is that relaxing in warm water and having a gentle massage can actually be very good for alleviating any aches and pains. But remember, your body temperature may be a bit higher during your period, so if you feel a bit too hot, don't spend too long in the sauna!

The most important thing to consider is simply how you will be feeling on the day. If you get really bad period pains, then you might not have the best time. If you want to change your booking, remember to give plenty of notice so you don't incur any charges.
