What are the best facial solutions for summer skin?
Sunburnt, peeling, flaky skin? Must be that holiday time of year again. We asked Clare Rogers, owner of The Treatment Rooms in Brighton, for her top tips on combating summer skin syndrome. Here are her insights.
Fight dehydration
There's a big difference in summer and winter skin. In the summer, the number one thing you absolutely must do is keep hydrated by drinking water. You're not just fighting the effects of the warmer weather, but often people exercise more, and so sweat more, too. You have to put fluid back in your system to achieve balance. Exposure to the sun and sunburn will also cause skin to peel."
Fight "flight-skin"
My tip for avoiding dehydrated post-flight skin is to always take a mini-moisturiser and facial spritz with you on board. Remove your make-up before boarding, then liberally moisturise. Have a lip balm with you, too, and apply as often as you need. Keep moisturising and spritzing all through the flight and you'll arrive looking great.
Stop sun-cream spots
Some people experience break-outs after using sun cream, but you need to protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. A lot of the high-street brands can be quite heavy and clog your pores. The best way to deal with this is by treating sun cream like make-up and make sure you remove it all at the end of the day. Whenever I come back from a holiday where I've used a heavy sun block, I always book in for a facial; even though I remove the block every night, I can still feel my skin is clogged.
Spa-at-home solution
* Spend more time on your basic routine. Exfoliate your face twice a week. Hydrate with a good moisturiser. Some people will spend a lot of money on a good product and then not use it because they don't want it to run out! That's no good, you have to use it -- not excessively, but you do need it to do the job.
* Once a week, indulge with a hydrating mask. I'd recommend Aromatherapy Associates Essential Skin Care Rose Hydrating Face Mask, that's great for sensitive and sun-damaged skin. Mature skin types should try DIBI's Age Repair range; it's more of a treatment than a pampering product, but DIBI produces great results.
Top tan tip
I know that when people come back from a holiday, they don't want to lose their tan. They'll carefully pat themselves dry after a shower and even stop exfoliating! But that will make you lose your tan faster because dry skin will peel off.
Start preparing before you leave: exfoliate and moisturise your face and body, and keep doing that during and after your break. If you've got healthier skin from the beginning, you'll keep that healthy glow for longer.
