What are the best facial solutions for winter skin?

Dry, flaky skin? Are you suffering from "winter skin syndrome"? We asked celebrity facialist, Sally Medcalf, from West One Beauty in London, to share her top tips.

"In the colder months, everyone has dry skin; it's cold outside and then you go into a centrally heated office or house. The moisture in your skin just evaporates with the heat and then the cold. Your skin also becomes dehydrated as well as dry. You often get a very rough feeling to the skin on your face, which is a build-up of dead skin. You might also feel that when you use products on your skin, they don't seem to be properly absorbed. "

"As a beauty therapist, my advice would always be to get a facial! I work with two different brands, Dermalogica and Karin Herzog. Both offer great facials which combat "winter skin syndrome"."

Spa Solution

"The Karin Herzog Smoothie facial involves very gentle exfoliation; a sweet-smelling oil gently dissolves the dead skin. Then we put an oxygen cream on top to plump skin up with water, leaving it smooth. Dermalogica facials are individual to the person; we use a bespoke skin care blend to get just the right combination for each skin type."

Spa-At-Home Solution

"If you can't have a facial, there are things you can do at home. The first thing to do is exfoliate. I know people with sensitive skin are always afraid of exfoliating but there will be a product out there that works for you that is gentle enough. Get advice from a skincare professional if you're concerned. If you don't get rid of that dead skin, whatever you put on top will just sit there and won't do any good. Finally, follow up with a really good moisturiser."

Top Tip:

"If you suffer from acne, make sure you only use water-based, oil-free moisturisers; they are the best for your skin type."
