I wear glasses and can't see much at all without them. How would I cope at a spa?

Many good spas will be able to cater for people with poor vision. Contact a spa in advance to let them know that you're planning to visit: the spa manager should be able to answer any questions that you have and help to put your mind at ease.

Carly Griffin, spa manager at the Sofitel London Heathrow spa, advises,

"Anyone booking into a spa should let the receptionist know they have poor vision so that the team is aware before the guest arrives. At the Sofitel Spa, all of our guests have a private tour of the spa and are guided from the changing area through to the Hydro Suite.

For treatments, guests that wear glasses will be at real ease with our ESPA-trained therapists. They are highly qualified and explain the treatment procedure fully before the treatment begins, so the guest knows what to expect.

The contact in a treatment is rarely broken so the guest can feel the therapist moving around the room. Our therapists give 100% client care throughout the treatment and at no point would they leave the room, which may lead to a guest feeling uneasy. In our vitality pool there are safety rails to help guests in and out of the pool and to guide them if they have poor vision.

There are also emergency cords located throughout the gym and spa if a guest needed to alert the spa reception team of any problems. We welcome everyone to the spa and wouldn't want anyone to not visit due to poor vision. They would be very well looked after and will float out of the spa feeling relaxed!"

If you're worried about finding your way around a spa without your glasses, go with a friend. Spa-ing is so much fun with two. Your friend can help you navigate from sauna to pool, and you can relax together on a sociable spa day a deux.
