Dermalogica
Dermalogica is a US skincare brand with a cult-like following among celebrities, spa-goers and spa professionals alike. Simply packaged and fuss-free, this high-quality range gives effective results time after time. The Dermalogica spa experience is similarly results-driven.
A Dermalogica facial treatment begins with Facial Mapping, in which the skin of the face is divided into 14 zones, including the forehead, eyes, nose, cheeks and chin. Each area is then examined to determine your skin type and any problems before treatment begins. This method is used to give your skin a personalised prescription for treatments and products.
They say: "Dermalogica is founded on the belief that good skin care is not about pampering or luxury ... any more than brushing your teeth or washing your hair is!"
We say: "This cult brand is low on hype and big on results."

Application: : When you dispense the recommended half-teaspoon of dry, white powder in wet hands, it turns into a lovely, creamy paste which is a pleasure to use. Just massage on, and rinse off. This "microfoliant" doesn't contain abrasive granules, so it's gentle enough to use regularly. It is an effective exfoliator and doesn't leave any oily residue on skin whatsoever, so don't use it daily if you have very dry skin. What's in it? Colloidal oats, salicylic acid, papaya and rice, grapefruit, liquorice, aspergillus, green tea and ginkgo. Effect: After rinsing, my skin felt very clean and smooth, and perfectly prepped for applying moisturiser. This product gets on beautifully with my skin (thirsty, reactive combination skin with a tendency to sallow paleness), leaving it clear, fresh, rosy and very comfortable to be in. Verdict: An effective exfoliator that is neither abrasive nor oily. |

Application: This oil can be used for massage, and as a body or bath oil. What's in it?: Essential oils of sandalwood, lavender, orange and clary sage. Effect: After using this oil as a body oil, and occasionally for an aromatherapy bath, I had softer skin - but not too oily. I enjoyed using this, but I am not sure it can claim to banish all effects of stress! In the long term, my usually parched arms and legs definitely felt more hydrated. Verdict: Anyone who loves clean products will really enjoy this oil - because it contains no artificial fragrance or colour. I'd definitely buy it again. |

Application: This scrub smells gorgeous. Its formula is quite dry and thick, so you only need to use a small amount to smooth over wet skin. What's in it? Fig, date and olive seed powders; rice bran and papaya enzymes; essential oils of lavender, orange, sandalwood and rosemary. Effect: The scrub felt like it was giving my skin quite a tough workout, but afterwards my skin was not irritated whatsoever. I have never felt my skin so silky-soft. My boyfriend has dry, sensitive skin, and also had the same results ... as I realised when the tube migrated over to his corner of the bathroom shelf! Verdict: All in all, a fantastic scrub that does exactly what it promises. |

Application: This cleansing oil can be used to dissolve make-up and grime, prior to using your regular cleanser, to give your skin a really deep clean. Massage the oil onto dry skin, then add water. The oil turns into a milky emulsion and rinses off fairly easily. What's in it?: A combination of oils – olive, apricot kernel, kukui nut, borage, rice bran, vitamin E. Effect: The oil dissolved my mascara with ease and didn't sting my eyes. After rinsing, I could see that it had left my skin looking nicely clean, and without much of an oily residue. I followed this with my usual foaming cleanser, which then removed any final trace of the Precleanse. Verdict: A great product for cleansing after wearing heavy make-up, and useful for those who suffer from clogged pores. |
