Green & Spring
Green & Spring was established by Jessica and Peter Frankopan, who set up Cowley Manor and its C.Side Spa. Inspired by the Cotswolds countryside that surrounds Cowley Manor, they established the brand in 2009.
Green & Spring products all use "100% natural botanical materials" and all herbal extracts are sourced from the UK. They even contain spring water from Cowley! The products are made by hand in the UK and are free from parabens, SLS, SLES, PEGS, glycols, petrochemicals, synthetic colours and fragrances.
They say: "Inspired completely by the British countryside, Green & Spring products are created using herbs and flowers native to the British Isles. The products breathe in the goodness of land and, mixed with other ingredients to assist their efficacy and aroma, they exhale the amazing."
We say: "The Spa Spies loved the vintage-meets-modern packaging and skin-friendly ingredients. The jasmine in the Indulging range and the lavender in the Relaxing range sent us to aroma heaven. It appears as if we're still left looking for an effective SLS-free shampoo, though."

Application: A single press from the white pump dispenser delivers a good amount of opaque white cream. The scent is quite strong and it has a slightly medicinal smell, combined with peppermint. What's in it? Extracts of dandelion, thyme, fennel and peppermint, shea and cocoa butters, Cowley spring water. Effect: This cream was easily absorbed my skin, leaving it glistening but not overly greasy. The scent lingered for some time. Verdict: The unusual scent didn't grow on me. On the plus side, the cream made my skin feel great and I liked the fact that the products are free from chemical nasties. |

Application: This body wash is a smooth, clear gel with tiny pieces of walnut shell and mint. A little goes a long way as the gel is made dense with natural oils. It also makes it easy to slather in the shower without dripping through your fingers, too. What's in it?: Walnut shell and mint. Effect: The bits of walnut certainly didn't feel like they were exfoliating. Once dry, my skin felt soft and smooth, but as it would do after using a good moisturising wash, not a scrub. Verdict: A gorgeously refreshing shower gel. Just don't expect too much in the way of exfoliation. |

Application: More like the consistency of a creamy face mask, this scrub was easy to smooth over my face. Don't wet your face too much before use, though, as the scrub can get too slippery. When I worked the scrub into my skin it felt gentle, but after rinsing, I could tell that it had made a difference. What's in it? Tiny walnut granules to exfoliate, paired with shea butter, cocoa butter, sweet almond oil and a long list of herbal oils. Effect: My skin felt smooth and clean, without any dryness or irritation from coarse ingredients. Verdict: A soft scrub that exfoliates and moisturises. Perfect for dry or sensitive skin. |

Application: You only need a little bit of wash to clean your hands, and a little bit of cream to moisturise afterwards. Press gently on the pump dispensers as they tend to pump out far more than you need. What's in it? Vitamin E, lavender, rose, jasmine, thyme. The gentle lavender and rose scent smells pleasantly like an English garden. It’s naturally antiseptic, too. Effect: If you wash your hands regularly with an ordinary hand wash, the pesky sodium lauryl sulphate dries your skin out. You're left with the choice of buying a vat full of hand cream, or an SLS-free wash. This hand wash cleans well without drying, and the cream moisturises well, leaving hands fragrant. You only need to use a small amount of each, so they're good value, too. Verdict: A great pair of products for dry hands. |

Application:The instructions say to pour under running water to disperse the oil. They don't state how much, so I poured in about a couple of teaspoons and, as promised, it dispersed in the bathwater. What's in it? Rose, chamomile, jasmine, vetiver. (And, what's not in it): This oil was 'handmade in the British Isles' and is free from articificial colours, fragrances, parabens, SLS, SLES, PEGs or petrochemicals. Effect: The smell was divine - strong but fresh and pure with jasmine and lavender. The lavender gave it a sense of spa calm and was very inviting. Once in the bath I just spent a few minutes relaxing and inhaling the oil. I came out with soft skin and a relaxed mind. Verdict: I came out of the bath with a feeling of having treated myself. |

Application:The exfoliating granules in this balm are nice and fine. Sugar grains are combined with beeswax so they rub into the skin without scratching. The balm turned oily once I started rubbing it onto my skin, so it was very easy to apply. Also, the aroma appears to get stronger on contact. You really can smell the natural aromas of warm jasmine and calming elderflower. What's in it? Jasmine, elderflower, sugar and beeswax. Effect: After rinsing off the balm under warm water, I was amazed at how soft my skin felt. I always moisturise after a shower but this time there was no need. My skin looked radiant, felt nourished and silky smooth to touch. Verdict: For me, the mark of a good body scrub is determined by the exfoliant, the oil and the fragrance. The Green and Spring offering ranked highly in all categories. |

Application:As Green & Spring use 100% natural botanical materials, no foaming agents means no foam. This made me slather more shampoo on my head than was probably needed. The conditioner is a cream-coloured, thick cream, again very pleasantly herbal, but I did need to use a lot of it to cover all of my hair, and to ease out the knots. What's in it? Does a shampoo that doesn't foam make your hair clean? Maybe, but it didn't feel as clean as I would have liked. I wasn't sure that either the shampoo or the conditioner helped me capture the spirit of the British countryside, sadly, or suited my hair. Effect: After rinsing off the balm under warm water, I was amazed at how soft my skin felt. I always moisturise after a shower but this time there was no need. My skin looked radiant, felt nourished and silky smooth to touch. Verdict: Like the idea of the packaging; love the botanical-based philosophy; not sold on the performance. |
