Anne Sémonin

The French company was founded in 1986 by Madame Anne Sémonin who developed a series of treatments representing a personal and holistic approach to beauty.

In 2003, the company was bought by Aline Marcadet who developed a luxurious collection of treatments for the face and body. Under Aline, Anne Sémonin has positioned itself as an "Haute Couture" spa and beauty brand, producing carefully developed and customised products that cater to the specific and individual needs of one's skin.

They say: "Anne Sémonin products are designed to be combined in a way that enables each and every client to find their own personal beauty prescription, according to the needs of their skin and lifestyle. Anne Sémonin offers a personal touch, with uniquely designed treatment programmes for the spa and home."

We say: "A high end quality brand which delivers great results across their product lines."

Express Radiance Ice Cubes

Anne Semonin Express Radiance Ice Cubes at The Good Spa Guide

Application: Remove from packaging, wrap the ice cube in one of the provided gauze sheets and apply it to your skin.

What's in it? The cubes contain marine spring water, red micro-algae, extracts of tephrosia purpurea and evening primrose oil-- a pretty powerful cocktail.

Effect: The ice is certainly stimulating to the skin, which may partly account for the glowing look after application. My skin did look younger, so I was pleased with that effect, and also felt smoother, providing a perfect base for make-up. My only worry was that I found it difficult to make my skin absorb all of the liquid, so I was tempted to put a half-cube back in the freezer, which you are admonished not to do.

Verdict: A useful addition to the morning routine for a quick lift and glow.

Anne Semonin Exfoliating Mask at The Good Spa Guide

Application: Use the spatula provided to spread the pastel-green jelly-ish mousse with tiny granules onto your face.

Effect: I felt very fresh afterwards with a shiny clean face staring back at me in my mirror. My blackheads were visibly reduced and my face clear. It dried my skin a tad after use, so have a good toner and moisturiser to hand for afters.

Verdict: An expensively effective exfoliant and mask.

Active Serum

30ml, RRP £103

Anne Semonin Active Serum at The Good Spa Guide

Application: This serum is lighter than any I've used before – presumably deliberately formulated to be so for use night and day. The instructions recommend using five drops morning and evening but I felt that two or three was plenty.

What's in it? Listed ingredients include the slightly dubious sounding "marine springwater" with its "proven action on skin firmness and hydration". The serum also contains red micro-algae and evening primrose oil. Plus a selection of five parabens.

Effect: I was also impressed by how quickly my skin absorbed the light serum, leaving no visible residue. I have been using this product for over two weeks now and my skin is looking good. I'm pleased that I have avoided any unwelcome break-outs that sometimes invade when I use a heavier cream.

Verdict: Definitely at the pricier end of the moisturiser spectrum but, if you're looking for a lighter serum and have less than youthful skin, this serum is worth a trial.

Anne Semonin Eye Express Radiance Ice Cubes at The Good Spa Guide

Application: I turned out the ice cube, placed cube in gauze and swept the bag over my eyelid and under my eye. This I did until the ice cube melted and went slushy. It was pretty cold and so I rushed application, but dabbing seemed to help.

Effect: The result? The delicate skin around my eye felt plumped up, most definitely refreshed and the lines appeared reduced.

Verdict: For the serious beauty enthusiast who's happy to obtain good results from a fiddly and expensive process.

Precious Serum

30ml, RRP £86

Anne Semonin Precious Serum at The Good Spa Guide

Application: Apply to your face, neck and décolleté.

What's in it? This lovely night-time serum has been formulated with wheat germ, sesame and St John's Wort, and includes essential oils of rosewood, lavender, geranium, and rose which give it a lovely heady smell.

Effect: I noticed a definite improvement in the radiance of my facial skin. However, the big change came on my décolleté, which had spent a summer being sun-tinged, leaving it looking tired and wrinkled. Tthis serum truly transformed my skin, plumping out those tell-tale skin-damage lines, so I felt smooth and well moisturised.

Verdict: So does it work – most definitely yes!
