Mama Mio
Mama Mio was founded in London in 2005 by Sian Sutherland, Tanya Mackay and Kathy Miller. When Sian became pregnant, the three beauty entrepreneurs created their first Mama Mio pregnancy product: Tummy Rub.
All products carry Mama Mio's "No Nasties" guarantee, and are free of parabens, petrolatum, Sodium Laureth and Sodium Laurel Sulphate, Xenoestrogen, Phtalates, and synthetic colourants and fragrances.
They say: "We are probably the most selfish brand you will ever meet. We create products for ourselves; to solve the skincare issues WE want to overcome, using the very, very best ingredients at the highest potency to ensure that every product really works. And because our daily beauty rituals should be a pleasure, every Mama Mio product smells and feels fantastic."
We say: "All the Mama Mio products are packaged gorgeously: the boxes have pastel colours and nice bold writing telling you how fabulously free from nasties these lotions and potions are. And, it's true: they are fabulously free from nasties!"
The Mama Mio range was tested by Sweet Spy during and after her pregnancy.

Application: I used it "with joy" just like the box told me, twice a day. Probably even more than twice a day, in fact, as the butter really eased the discomfort of my skin stretching to accommodate 8lbs of baby. What's in it? It's packed with shea butter, along with natural oils that contain omega 3, 6 and 9, and make it smell delicious. Effect: Mama Mio's Tummy Rub Butter kept my skin feeling lovely and soft, even when stretched to its absolute limit. But (!) it did not stop me getting stretch marks. I have continued to use it after pregnancy because it is a marvellously moisturising, thick butter, even if you're not carrying a baby. Verdict: All pregnant women deserve a product like this, one that makes them feel special whilst slathering it onto their bumps. |

Application: A little of the Tummy Rub Oil goes a long way, and it is quickly absorbed into the skin. So, there's no need to worry about spoiling any of your maternity clothes. What's in it? The same omega oils as the Mama Mio Tummy Rub Butter -- this version is just a little more concentrated due to the absence of shea butter. Effect: The Tummy Rub Oil left my bump looking shiny and feeling nourished. Like the butter, I really enjoyed using the product, and it was soothing to my stretched skin. Mama Mio say that rubbing Tummy Rub Oil onto your bump "becomes a magic ritual of massaging your baby and a time to dream, thinking of names and what wonders await". And it did. Ahhh. I still got stretch marks, though. Verdict: Even if the oil doesn't prevent you from getting stretch marks, take the time to really enjoy this yummy product. |

Application: This is a high-quality product disguised by its fun packaging. And the packaging is clever, too: the style of the pump ensures that all the cream is squeezed out of a bag within the tube. Makes for easy and prudent application. What's in it? This product claims to help us back to "young and pert" again, thanks to the magic antioxidant ingredient CoQ10. Effect: I felt a bit ill equipped to review this product truthfully, as I am still enjoying a wonderful doubling in boob size thanks to breastfeeding. It made my skin feel well-nourished and hydrated, though, so this can only bode well for the future. According to the label, I'll be thanking them "in years to come". Verdict: Nourishing and hydrating. Get back to us in 20 years for the definitive verdict! |

Application: The Body Oil is meant to provide a lighter alternative to the Tummy Rub Oil -- something a little sleeker that sinks in even quicker. What's in it? Oils of sweet almond, jojoba, argan and safflower, and vitamin E. Effect: The Omega Body Oil is an everyday moisturiser that sinks in quickly. It helps skin to retain moisture and it smells gorgeous. It does exactly what it says it should do. But, next to the Tummy Rub Oil, this body oil felt a little flimsy. If I didn't have the much richer Tummy Rub Oil to compare it to, I might have been more impressed! Verdict: A nice body oil for light moisturisation. Not for very dry skin or the demands of pregnancy! |
