Choosing a spa

How do you make sure your spa experience is a delight and not a disappointment? After all, your "me-time" is precious, and doesn't come cheap. There are many different ways you can indulge in spa fun, tailored to suit different purses, pet peeves and personalities.

Make sure you choose the right spa for you by first answering these five questions:

1. What are you looking for?

A handy urban spa for a quick pick-me-up? A day of gliding from pool to sauna to massage? A sociable spa for a catch-up with friends? Somewhere far away with tranquil grounds for some solitude?

2. How much do you want to pay?

Would a no-frills bargain suit? Or is it time to splash out on a luxury trip?

3. Who will be going?

Do you want time alone? With your partner? With a large group of friends? Or perhaps you have a young family and would like to take them with you?

4. Do you want to make health and lifestyle changes, or just unwind?

Do you want to count calories or would you rather have champagne and chocolates?

5. What facilities and activities do you want?

Do you want a range of water or thermal facilities as well as treatments? Do you want a range of outdoor activities, or perhaps exercise classes?

Whatever you're looking for, you can probably find it somewhere. The key is knowing what you want and what to expect. Our Spa Spies have travelled all over the UK, visiting every type of spa from boutique treatment rooms to complete detox retreats.
